Our Origins
The tradition of handmade pipes in Recanati, a small town in the heart of Italy, dates back to 1850. In the early 1900s, Hully Briars was already a well‑established workshop employing around 40 craftsmen. It was during this flourishing period that Igino Moretti and his wife joined the company, which had grown to nearly 50 workers.
Half of the production was made for third parties, while the other half was sold under the brand BEP‑SON, a name created from the first syllables of the owners' names, Beppe and Sonia. Over time, Igino Moretti became the leading pipe maker at Hully Briars, but the company eventually closed its doors.
After passing a railway exam, Igino faced a decisive choice: become a train conductor or dedicate himself to pipe making. He followed his true calling and, in 1968, founded the brand Moretti Recanati. In the early years he continued producing pipes for others while developing his own line under the Moretti name.
Today, the tradition is carried on by Marco Biagini, Igino's son‑in‑law, who works faithfully according to the founder's teachings. Pipe Moretti is still based in Recanati, in the Marche region, right across from the birthplace of the Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi.
Pipe Moretti Today
Today, Pipe Moretti is known and appreciated worldwide. Marco and his son Luca proudly continue the family tradition, crafting each pipe entirely by hand. Only carefully selected materials are used: Italian briar seasoned for at least ten years, olive wood, and bog oak (morta) aged between 6,000 and 8,000 years.
Quality is at the heart of every decision. Each pipe is meticulously crafted to offer the best possible smoking experience. Many pieces are custom‑made, created according to the preferences of Pipe Moretti's friends and collectors.
Every Moretti pipe is shaped by the hands of a true artisan, without complex machinery. Marco, for example, holds the briar block in his hand while drilling the tobacco chamber, and he does the same when drilling the airway. It is a rewarding yet demanding process.
A distinctive feature of Moretti pipes is the exclusive use of 100% natural colors, with no chemical dyes of any kind. Marco also creates pipes with extraordinary grain patterns - a great source of pride for both the craftsman and the fortunate collector who owns one.
Marco Biagini's artisanal philosophy - built on respect for the material, attention to detail, and genuine passion - remains unchanged after decades of history, experience, and artistic satisfaction.
